*cheers CA*
There are moments, decisions, & actions which just make a person cheer. For me, this is one of them. That's the way the world should work; in my opinion equality is the right path. I don't care what your race, gender, ethnicity, creed, or orientation is. We're all made of the same stuff; we should all be equal.

Murphy, C.E.: Urban Shaman

Urban ShamanWriter: C.E. Murphy
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Pages: 344
The premise: after witnessing a woman in danger, protagonist Joanne Walker sets out to find this woman and make things right. Naturally, Jo finds herself entangled in a world she didn't know existed, where gods and godlings roam the Earth, banshees exist, and people are shamans.
The kicker is, she's just learned she's one of them.
With such a cool premise, I wish I liked the book more. But the plot didn't have a solid sense of direction, the villains' motivations were questionable, and to be honest, I didn't much care for the protag at the start of the book. There's a difference between ass-kicking and annoying, and unfortunately, Joanne's voice read to me as annoying. But that's me. What makes urban fantasy work for me is voice, and the voice just didn't appeal to me personally, but it might appeal to someone else. I don't mind having read this book, but I'm not interested in the rest of the books in the trilogy, even though I wouldn't mind reading some of Murphy's later, unrelated work.
The full review is in my journal if anyone's interested. As always, comments and discussion are most welcome.
REVIEW: C.E. Murphy's URBAN SHAMAN
Happy Reading! :)

Here's a conversation that could probably only take place at 12:30am:

Me: I've used this one for years. I must have mistyped it.
Cashier: Go ahead and tell me. I'll put it in.
Me: xxx-xxx-xxxx
Cashier: Ok, that went through.
Guy behind me: Ooh, now I have your phone number.
Me: Actually, you have my ex-husband's phone number.
Guy: I should give him a call. Maybe he likes to party.
Me: You do that.
It's worth noting to Seattle-ites that this unsurprisingly took place in the University District. And that the guy behind me was buying beer.
Anyway, in other news, St. Vladimir's has a motto! Ironically, it wasn't actually an entry, but it was *inspired* by an entry. Congratulations to

Interview with Jeri Smith-Ready

A couple of months ago, I was fortunate enough to snag an ARC of Jeri Smith-Ready’s WICKED GAME (May 13, 2008, from Pocket Books), and absolutely loved it, so I was thrilled for the opportunity to interview her for FFF. Keep reading to find out which scenes from the book are her favorite (and mine) and how she came by such in depth knowledge of rock history and the radio industry!
RACHEL: Jeri, the biggest surprise for me when I read Wicked Game was that it’s told in present tense. Because of that, I honestly wasn’t sure how much I’d like it. But I loved it! What made you decide to write this particular novel in present tense? Were there any particular challenges associated with that choice? Will future Ciara Griffin novels also be written in present tense?

Alexa Young Interview and Contest!!!

Tuesday marked release day for two authors I’ve gotten to know and love recently. Jeri Smith-Ready released WICKED GAME and she will be on the blog on Monday. And Alexa Young released FRENEMIES and she is here today! Best of all, both of them are running contests for their books!!! I haven’t had contests on here yet, so I’m pretty psyched, how ‘bout you?Alexa Young has quickly become one of my author BFFs. I met her while trying to find someone to collaborate with on a rock ‘n’ roll literary event in
Now admittedly, I still have to get my copy of FRENEMIES (planning to pick it up at the bookstore this weekend!), but I read the first chapter online and am psyched! (You can read it, too, by going here) When I first approached Alexa about doing events with me, she swore that she and her book were not cool enough for me the punk rock girl with the punk rock book. But I assured her that despite the tough girl façade, I am the least judgmental person ever and I like a wide variety of things and refuse to be ashamed of them. For example, I’ve been watching the soap opera One Life to Live since I was fourteen. FRENEMIES appeals to my inner-soap opera lover as well as my inner teen-melodrama-lovin’ Degrassi fan. (When the N runs a Degrassi marathon, my weekend is usually shot.) Here’s what the book’s about:
Best friends Avalon Greene and Halley Brandon have big plans for eighth grade: Not only are they coauthoring a fashion column for their school’s online newspaper, but their celebration of their forever friendship is sure to be the blowout party of the year. But when the girls begin to disagree about…well, everything, these two besties turn into full-blown worsties. From sharing custody of their puppy, Pucci, to drawing up a list of who gets which friends, Avalon and Halley discover what happens when you battle the person who knows you best—and isn’t afraid to use your secrets to get what she wants.
You can learn even more about the book at www.bestfrenemiesforever.com
As for Alexa not thinking she’s cool??? Yeah I have to disagree. Check out exactly how cool she is:
ALEXA YOUNG spent the first several years of her professional life working in the music industry—for the legendary Capitol Records and the irreverently funny trade magazine HITS. She subsequently worked as an editor for the now-defunct teen magazine JUMP, as well as for the #1 women’s fitness magazine in the country, SHAPE. As a freelance writer, she’s contributed to a number of national consumer magazines, including Marie Claire, O: The Oprah Magazine and Family Circle. She holds a bachelor's degree in Literature/Writing from the
You can learn more about Alexa on her website and her blog. But today, she is here to answer my favorite questions to ask authors and also give away a signed copy of FRENEMIES!
Now I’m sure you think Alexa is as cool as I do (love the honesty about paying her bills!) and you probably wanna win her book, so here is how you can win. Leave a comment in which you tell us about a song that reminds you of either your best friend or one of your frenemies. Be sure to tell WHY the song reminds you because Alexa will choose the best song story and that person will win a signed copy of FRENEMIES! You have until Monday May 19th at 8 am CST to enter, so start commenting!
Even though I am not eligible, I figured I will share my songs. Actually I have an entire album for my best friend Katie. She’s just that cool and I’m just that music-obsessed. It’s …And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid, which reminds me of junior year (Katie’s sophomore year) when we were always planning to run away. It also reminds me of our loyalty to each other and in fact this summer we are incorporating a lyric, “To the end, to the end, I’ll journey to the end” into a tattoo we’ll both be getting.
My frenemy song is “Bruise Violet” by Babes in Toyland. Though the girl that Katie and I used to scream a certain very angry line (umm, you can read the lyrics here and guess…) at was much more an enemy than she ever was a friend. It’s the ultimate punk rock girl frenemy song though because Kat Bjelland of Babes wrote it about her frenemy Courtney Love.
Okay, share your stories and win!!!!

How Much Do You Share? (x-posted)

A writing friend recently asked what my second book was about. Good question. Right now it's a companion book to The Forest of Hands and Teeth, ostensibly it's a sequel but we'll still see if that label fits once it's finished and turned in (incidentally, writing under contract does feel a lot like school, just with longer deadlines before you turn in your homework). As I pondered what more I could say about the book I started to wonder how much people really share about what they're writing.
Early on, when the idea for FHT came to me, I didn't say much about it on my blog. Maybe I didn't want to jinx it, maybe I was following what other writers were doing, but not talking about what I was writing suddenly became my habit. For my previous projects (pre FHT) I had word meters up (which I then protested) and talked at least minimally about what I was writing. And then, at the other end of the spectrum you have authors who have daily updates not only about word count, but also about plot.
On the one hand, I'm a writer and I blog about writing. It seems silly not to talk about what I'm actually working on at any given moment. On the other hand, I don't want to give too much information because I'm very anti-spoiler.
Plus, there's another element at play. It's hard to know how much I'm "supposed" to talk about. Not that there's a blog mafia out there watching my every word, but you start to get advice that maybe you shouldn't complain about writing, maybe you shouldn't talk about the struggles or put up a word count meter that will not only show the added words, but also the deleted words.
So that's the question I ask y'all. As blog readers, how much information do you want? What do you like to read about? As blog writers (or any kind of writer) how much do you share or think you should share?

My brother the tech nerd has preached the Gospel of Apple for years now. I held out, though, because I didn’t like the whole one-company-develops-all-the-hardware-an
I mean, this is my computer. I bought it. How come Steve Jobs still gets so much say what I can do with it? Sure, everything Apple makes looks sleek and shiny, but know what? Those military parades Kim Jong-Il is always putting on look pretty sleek and shiny too, don’t they?
The world of PCs is an open market, though. Different companies competing to build a better whozit, and everybody getting to decide for themselves which whozit works for them. That’s democracy. That’s innovation. The type of innovation Patrick Swayze used to fight those filthy commies in Red Dawn.
Then my computer picked up a nasty trojan last week. I ran three different anti-virus programs, including one I bought just for that problem, and none of them could root it out. The fucking thing almost completely bricked my computer, and I was reduced to groveling in front of the screen, begging it to please just work, and finally, punching a wall and splitting my knuckle.
I never act that way when my truck breaks down or my alarm clock doesn’t go off; there’s just something about computers. In my head, I know that it’s a mindless, heartless machine, just a bunch of switches turning on and off. But maybe because it all takes place inside that humming grey box, it feels like magic, like the thing has some fickle personality. I start acting like some South Seas native who sees a volcano erupt and thinks the gods are angry. It’s all I can do to keep from sacrificing virgins in front of my printer.
So anyway, I finally call my brother for help, and during the course of the conversation, I ask what sort of anti-virus software he runs. He tells me--this IT guy, this master’s degree in computer science guy, this guy I go to when my machine breaks down--that he doesn’t have any. Macs, he says, don’t need it.
I really wasn’t in a good emotional state to make major purchases, but I did anyway, plunking down a hefty chunk of my last advance for a MacBook. I didn’t even want a desktop computer by that point. I wanted one box with one cord and the least amount of clutter as possible.
It arrived fresh from Shanghai (from communist China, of course) yesterday, and so far, I’m pretty impressed. Connecting to my modem through a router took all of three minutes. (Instead of the three days it took with my PC.) iWord seems a lot easier to navigate and more intuitive that WordPerfect. In fact, it’s probably the only word processor you’d ever describe as “cute.”
What I’d never considered before is the fact that the sleekness and shininess goes all the way down. Because one company develops everything, everything fits and works together with a minimum off fuss. I’m not saying Apple isn’t Communist; I’m just saying maybe Communism isn’t that bad after all.
My MacBook isn’t perfect. I’m really missing my second mouse button right now. At the same time, though, I’m starting to think that Our Beloved Leader Steve Jobs knows what's best for us. If he says right-clicking is a sickening capitalist indulgence, I will believe it.
